As he ventured deeper, the landscapes grew more treacherous. He navigated the slippery, ink-black depths of underwater caverns where Bloopers darted through the currents. He sprinted across the dizzying heights of athletic bridge levels, narrowly avoiding the snapping jaws of Cheep-Cheeps leaping from the abyss. By World 4, the sun beat down on scorching deserts; by World 7, he was navigating a maze of pipes and Lakitus raining Spiny eggs from the clouds. The heavy iron door at the back of the chamber creaked open. There stood Princess Toadstool, safe at last. With a wave of her hand, the dark magic lifted, restoring the kingdom to its former glory. The Mushroom Kingdom was a world of vibrant greens and pixelated blues, a peaceful land ruled by Princess Toadstool. That peace shattered when the sky darkened with the shadow of the Koopa Troopas. Using powerful dark magic, Bowser, the King of the Koopas, transformed the mushroom people into stones, bricks, and field horsehair plants, plunging the realm into a static nightmare. He then kidnapped the Princess, the only one with the power to undo his spell.

Word of the invasion reached two brothers working in the pipes: Mario and Luigi. With a resolute nod, Mario stepped through the first warp pipe, beginning an epic trek across eight distinct worlds.
