Number 8 is a significant departure from her previous blues and soul-influenced work, featuring a "pulsating electronic backdrop" and synthesizer-heavy production. This shift was a creative necessity; since 2007, Brown has suffered from a vocal condition that prevents her from achieving vocal cord closure and pitch simultaneously.
