Following the events of the first episode, Ryan attempts to make amends for his past behavior. He invites Annie on their first "proper" date to a restaurant, though the effort is somewhat undercut when his brother and friends join them later. Annie also meets Ryan’s mother, Janelle, who surprisingly already knows about Annie's recent abortion.

Annie begins to push back against her mother Vera's critical comments regarding her weight and habits. During a walk together, Annie explicitly tells Vera she does not appreciate the snide remarks, leaving her mother confused but setting a new boundary. Shrill SUB ITA 1x2
