Being R-rated allows for some visceral, stomach-churning visuals that the previous PG-13 entries couldn't touch. The Not-So-Good
The film follows several interconnected stories centered around a house cursed by a vengeful spirit. When a woman brings the curse back from Japan to her home in Pennsylvania, a series of gruesome deaths follows. Detective Muldoon (Andrea Riseborough) eventually uncovers the dark history of the residence, realizing that the "grudge" never forgets and never lets go.
Despite the heavy atmosphere, the movie often falls back on predictable loud-noise jump scares rather than building sustained dread.
Jumping between 2004, 2005, and 2006 can feel disjointed. It occasionally disrupts the tension rather than adding to the mystery.
